The
New iBT TOEFLTM
Test
The test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFLTM) is a standardized
test that measures the English proficiency of students who wish
to enter college, university, and/or the workplace in English-speaking
academic/professional settings. The new iBT (internet-based
test) TOEFLTMexam, also
known as The Next Generation TOEFLTM
Test, has four sections covering the language skills of reading,
listening, speaking, and writing. The test is about 3 ½ - 4
hours long, with one 10 minute break after the listening section.
In the reading section, students read three passages about some
academic / university topic and answer (13-14 questions per
reading passage) questions about them.
In the listening section, students listen
to two conversations and four lectures and answer questions
about them. In the speaking section, students speak in response
to two questions about their own experience (give an opinion)
and four questions about texts that they listen to or read during
the test. In the writing section, students write in response
to two questions. One question is about a reading and a lecture,
and the other question is about a general topic (give an opinion).
Boston
Academy of English and the iBT TOEFLTM
Boston Academy of English, offers a two-month
TOEFLTM preparation course.
The first month is more theoretical in nature, because it describes
and breaks down the four sections of the test, what type of
questions the student can expect in each section. In month-1
we also work on academic skills such as, listening comprehension
and note-taking, summarizing and paraphrasing. The second month
(month-2) is more practical in nature, focusing more on the
text that we use, coming into class ready to practice, discuss,
critique, and form constructive criticism(s). You can choose
between one or the two months options.
